AFL great Wayne Carey has revealed he has given up alcohol indefinitely after he found he was suffering from memory following drinking sessions.
Carey, 52, hasn’t touched a drink in a little over a fortnight, and is also now a regular at his gym.
The dual premiership winner with North Melbourne told Tony Sheahan on The Truth Hurts podcast that his lifestyle change has come at the perfect time.
‘I’m making myself accountable because there’s no end date to it,’ Carey said.
‘[Previously] I was going into meetings on a Friday, and sitting down and having lunch … I’d have a couple of beers and be at an important lunch, whether it be work or other things that you’ve got going on.
‘[Then I’d] wake up Saturday morning, and I’d have been home by [Friday] dinner time, can’t remember lunch. I can’t remember conversations or details of that lunch.

Carey (pictured with son Carter) hasn’t touched a drop in a little over a fortnight – and there is ‘no end date’ as to how long he will stay off the grog
‘[So I decided it was] time to just go bang and not have a drop for a little while.’
Carey then confirmed he is already sleeping better, is a better father and is ‘not popping as many anti inflammatories’, which he uses after suffering serious injuries during his playing days.
In late 2022, Carey attracted plenty of unwanted headlines after a bag of white powder fell from his pocket at Perth’s Crown Casino.
The man affectionately known by footy fans as ‘Duck’ was adamant the zip-lock bag contained crushed anti-inflammatory medication he used to control pain resulting from his injuries.
Western Australia police investigated the matter and didn’t file any charges against Carey.

In August last year, Carey and TikTok star Catie O’Neill called time on their relationship.
‘The King’ then stunned plenty of footy fans last October after bizarrely confirming how many times he slept with Kelli Stevens – the wife of his former teammate Anthony Stevens.
When the scandal unfolded in 2002, it rocked the sport and saw Carey – a North Melbourne great – leave the club in disgrace and link up with the Adelaide Crows.
The affair also destroyed Carey and Stevens’ long-standing friendship on and off the field.
